Community Spotlight: Liliana’s Story — Strength, Knowledge & Self-Care
In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month
At Prescription, we believe movement is about more than just the physical — it’s about strength, resilience, and connection. This month, as we honour Breast Cancer Awareness, our spotlight shines on someone who embodies all three: Liliana, one of our incredible trainers, who’s sharing her personal story in hopes of helping others feel seen, supported, and empowered.
Liliana’s Story
“As we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month, I wanted to share a personal aspect of my life in hopes that someone else won’t feel alone or scared.
In 2016 I discovered through genetic testing that I had the BRCA2 gene, which means I was at an 87% risk of getting breast cancer. Back then this was not something that was very spoken about and it was really only Angelina Jolie who had gone public with her story. This made it more difficult to cope with. I started my yearly mammograms and MRI screenings and always remained healthy but mentally I was drained, thoughts that cancer could appear one day consumed me.
After speaking with oncologists, surgeons and researchers, in 2019 I made the decision to get a preventive double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I was lucky to keep my skin, nipples and only have minor scars and although I physically looked the same, the decision process was still a difficult one to make, the peace of mind however has been priceless. I now only have a 1% chance of getting breast cancer, less than gen pop.
Reflecting back now, this was just another step in me being pro-active with my health. Knowledge is powerful and can empower you to learn and make the right choices. Use this to your advantage, especially when so many women have not been given any options or simply don’t have access to proper healthcare.”
Liliana’s story is a powerful reminder that self-care goes beyond workouts, facials, and green smoothies — it’s also about taking ownership of your health, asking questions, and making choices that protect your wellbeing.
Her courage and openness reflect what we stand for as a community: honesty, empowerment, and the belief that looking after yourself — inside and out — is a form of strength.
This month, we encourage you to take time for your health. Schedule a check-up, listen to your body, and share your story if you can. You never know who might need to hear it.
